Wellness Wednesdays: Wellness promoting activities around my home town of Frome

Sometimes you wake up and maybe you just don’t feel as full of the joys as you would like to. I felt like this yesterday after a particularly busy weekend. I decided to take things in hand and do some of the things that I know help greatly to improve my mental and physical wellbeing and give me an emotional lift to cheer me through the week.

These are just a few things right on my doorstep that I am blessed to have access to enjoy and be thankful for:

1. Walking in nature

For me, walking in the woods (ideally accompanied by my 4 pawed pal) lifts my spirits immensely. Just listening to the wildlife, enjoying the birds, the insects and all the wild fauna. Sometimes returning home with pockets full of foraged goodies to add to our meal. This week the bluebells in East Woodlands have been stunning. Nothing beats some forest bathing in Longleat woods. Take time to breathe deeply and touch some of the textures of the trees. Maybe even find a sunlit patch of grass to sit upon and while away some time.

2. Nurture plants

Just 10 mins in the garden even when it is grey or damp can punctuate your day. One small task usually develops into a number and before I know it I have dirt under my nails, soil on my face and a great sense of satisfaction. If you don’t have space adjacent to where you live or you fancy a trip out to enjoy other beautiful outdoor spaces, then I highly recommend the Walled Garden in Mells. A Community plant nursery with beautiful gardens to visit and explore and wonderful seating to enjoy a cup of tea from their seasonal Garden cafe. Or make more of a meal of it with a delicious pizza from their woodfired pizza oven! Alternatively the Beehive in Chapmanslade is the most enchanting space to explore, reconnect with your inner child, get close to a wonderful array of plants and indulge in some delicious refreshments. What's not to like?!

3. Cold water swimming

My most favourite thing of course is a brief cold water dip, there is nothing that gives that tingle and afterglow like a swim in the fantastic water at Vobster Quay. Just a few minutes in the silky water makes me feel so alive and rejuvenated. There is nothing quite like it! It certainly has the ability to change me from a worrier into a warrior! You do need to be a member to register and swim here but if you know a member you can ask to be taken as a guest to give it a go for yourself.

4. Yoga

Rolling out the yoga mat either first thing in the morning or last thing at night or even during the day for a quick 10 minutes to salute the sun and stretch out the body, slow the breathing and tame the mind. If you are looking for yoga classes in Frome - Rise Frome is a great place to start looking, there are so many different types of yoga class available most days of the week.

5. Head to your local

At the end of the day - sometimes it's just nice to head out and spend some time with friends or a loved one (or your dog!) at the local. Our lovely local, the Crown Inn is always so welcoming and relaxed. We like to drop in sometimes early evening to mark a stop to our working day, catch up and decide what's for tea! You never know who you might meet or bump into. Plus its supporting a local business and valuable community asset.
